Tunis: a CGTT meeting dispersed by police

Last Sunday, (30th November) a meeting organized by the CGTT in Tunis was forbidden by police.

The new independent Tunisian trade union had invited its activists to a meeting in Tunis at 9 o’clock on Sunday morning to finalize the commemoration of two important dates in its history: the creation of the first CGTT in 1924 (3rd December) and the assassination of one of it’s leaders (Farhat Hached) the 5th of December 1952.

CGTT local union leaders arriving from all parts of the country were surprised by an important police cordon forbidding them access to their meeting place. Although both the meeting and the commemoration were planned to be orderly and peaceful, armed officers informed them their assembly was prohibited.

Despite its legal constitution in compliance with both Tunisian law and international conventions, the authorities refuse to recognize the CGTT and employ harassment and provocation to impair its legal union activity.

The CGTT, which has already made an official complaint to the ILO, has once more protested against this latest interference in its internal affairs.
