November 3rd 2008- A Fight for Dignity and against Subcontracting
The Holiday Inn Express and Candlewood Suites, located at 155 and 191 Rene Lévesque Boulevard East in Montreal and registered under the name Faubourg Saint-Laurent, belong to the Aquilini family. As it happens, the Aquilinis also own a NHL hockey team, the Vancouver Canucks, in Canada.
For over two years, employees of this hotel have been trying to gain recognition for their democratic union (Confédération des syndicats nationaux) in order to improve their working conditions. Despite overwhelming support by the workers, their employer has used a variety of tactics, such as subcontracting staff to another company, to prevent accreditation of this union.
Long live the solidarity! The union members of the hotel Queen Elizabeth, on strike, went to support them. And UCCO-SACC-CSN members in solidarity with the Faubourg workers distributed flyers before the first Canucks hockey game in Vancouver !!
